Privacy Policy

Level Up Fiction is a small site run by me, Murray Jensen, from Queensland, Australia. This page explains what information the site collects when you visit, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: I do not ask you for personal information, I do not sell anything about you, and most of what is collected is collected by the services the site relies on, like Amazon and Google.

What the site collects

You do not need an account to read anything here, and there are no comment sections or sign-up forms. The site does collect some information automatically:

  • Server logs. Like almost every website, the server records basic technical details of each visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the page requested. These are used to keep the site running and secure.
  • Security logs. A security plugin records IP addresses involved in suspicious activity, such as repeated failed attempts to log in to the site admin.
  • Analytics. The site uses Google Analytics to understand how many people visit, which pages they read and how they found the site. More on this below.

If you email me, I receive your email address and whatever you put in the message. I use that only to reply to you.

Amazon and Audible affiliate links

Level Up Fiction is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon.com. Many links on this site go to Amazon or Audible, and if you buy something or start a subscription after clicking one, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. The full details are on the affiliate disclosure page.

When you click one of those links, Amazon knows you arrived from this site. Third parties, including Amazon and other advertisers, may serve content and advertisements, collect information directly from visitors, and place or recognise cookies on your browser. What Amazon does with that information is covered by its own privacy notice, not this one.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics uses cookies to collect information such as the pages you view, how long you stay, the type of device you use and the general area you are in. I see this as totals and trends, not as a record of any one person. I use it to work out which articles are useful and what to write next.

Google processes this data under its own terms. You can read how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services. If you would rather not be counted, Google offers a browser add-on that opts you out of Google Analytics on every site.

Google Analytics keeps data linked to cookies or user identifiers for up to 14 months, after which it is deleted. Where data protection law such as the GDPR applies, I rely on my legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used and improving it.

Fonts

Some of the fonts on this site are loaded from Google Fonts. To deliver them, your browser connects to Google, which receives your IP address. Google says it uses this to provide the service. See the Google Fonts privacy FAQ.

Cookies and your choices

The cookies involved here come from Google Analytics and, once you click through to their sites, from Amazon and Audible.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site will still work. To opt out of interest-based advertising from companies that take part in industry programs, you can use the Digital Advertising Alliance opt-out (US) or Your Online Choices (UK and Europe).

Some browsers send a “Do Not Track” signal. There is no agreed standard for how websites should respond to it, so this site does not currently change its behaviour when it receives one. The opt-out options above work regardless.

Where information is stored

The site is hosted with an Australian hosting provider. Backups of the site, which include the basic data WordPress keeps, are stored in Google Drive. Google Analytics data is stored by Google and may be processed outside Australia.

What I do not do

  • I do not sell, rent or trade information about visitors.
  • I do not run display ads on this site.
  • I do not knowingly collect information from children.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what information is held about you, to have it corrected or deleted, or to object to how it is used. Because I do not collect personal details directly, there is usually very little I hold. If you want to ask, email me and I will help where I can. If you are in the UK or the European Union and are unhappy with how your information has been handled, you also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Changes to this policy

If the site starts collecting something new, such as a mailing list, I will update this page and the date at the top.
